He received his professional education at the Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography, and later at the Lunacharsky State Institute for Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow. Even in his early period, one can see an interest in independent color and a striving for metaphorical imagery—features that would later become defining characteristics of his work. From the early 1960s, Gumarov actively participated in the artistic life of Kazakhstan. He worked in painting and graphics, creating cycles based on vivid color dynamics, philosophical symbolism, and tense, expressive compositions. His works explore themes of human inner energy and the interaction with nature and space. His works are held in museum collections across Kazakhstan— including the Atyrau Regional Museum, museums in Almaty, as well as in private collections. He lived and worked in Almaty. He passed away in 1995. His artistic legacy holds a significant place in the history of Kazakhstani painting of the second half of the 20th century.
