Years of life:

b. 1970, Almaty

Biography:

Born on April 29, 1970, in Almaty, to architect Timur Suleimenov and musicologist Saida Yelemanova, she participated in the first local underground exhibitions of the legendary Green Triangle group from 1988 to 1991. In 1996, she graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of KazGASU with a degree in Architectural Environmental Design. She also won first prize at the International Diploma Project Competition in Yekaterinburg, Russia. In 1998, she received a scholarship from the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Since 1990, she has been a member of the Youth Association of the Union of Artists of Kazakhstan. Since 1998, she has been a member of the Union of Artists of Kazakhstan. In 2004, she began working on the "Kazakh Chronicle" series using the grattage technique. Works from the series were exhibited at the Tengri-Umai Gallery in Almaty and at the "Kazakh: Paintings by Saule Suleimenova" exhibition in the United States. In 2008, Christie's auctioned off a work from the "Kazakh Chronicle" series, using the "painting on photographs" technique. In these works, the artist explores the dialogue between times—present and past, between everyday street life and the memory preserved in archival photographs. In 2009, the theme of Kazakhstan's national identity in the artist's art was explored in greater detail at the exhibition "East of Nowhere" in Turin, Italy. The exhibition "I'm Kazakh," held at the Central Exhibition Hall in Almaty in 2010, can be considered a unique conceptual culmination of this series. In 2014, Saule Suleimenova began a new project, “Cellophane Painting,” a series of works made from colorful plastic bags.
